Ankh introduces the audience to the lifelong partner (Luc Verlinden) and shows his hopeful Egyptian treasure-hunting adventure to find his deceased husband Patrick Knight (as himself) and accidentally brings him back to life. During his resurrection, the viewer is taken down memory lane on a cruise down the Nile that ends in Cairo, where a complete transformation into Queen Nefertiti’s look-alike is accomplished. Ofra Haza, the Madonna of the East follows them closely and helps them in their search for the key to life, Ankh, the afterlife. Ankh is a travelogue through ancient Egypt and makes the beautiful soundtrack (music by Gravity Noir) come to life. Ankh has won more than 30 international film awards and is well received by the LGBTQ+ community.

Shown on primetime BBC tv and at film festivals in the USA (Brooklyn, New Haven). This film follows the work of a group of eccentric British pipe organ enthusiasts rescuing beautiful pipe organs from closing churches. Refurbishing, repairing, re-homing and playing them – we learn how they work, and experience the wonderful music they create.

Organ rescuer Martin Renshaw travels northern England looking for endangered pipe organs.“At least one British church closes each week” he says, “and half their organs are worth saving”. Martin encounter sprightly 95-year-old Blanche Beer, a village organist from an old coal mining part of the UK. She’s played the organ at her local church for over 80 years. She tells us about the history of the village and its music as she plays the instrument for the last time. It’s a life and culture that’s all but disappeared. We also see Martin save a beautiful nineteenth century organ in one village and in another he rescues a large instrument whose “rebirth” in the heart of an an Afro-Caribbean inner city church becomes the redemptive story at the heart of the film.

The work of other pipe organ rescuers is also featured. Award-winning avant-garde musician Claire Singer is reinventing organ music and playing on an historic instrument saved by a secular charity. Marc Ogier’s a Mancunian sound engineer rescuing pipe organs by buying parts and rebuilding organs in his back bedroom. And famed in the organ world for saving near-dead historic instruments, we follow Dominic Gwynn as he resuscitates Dublin’s 1684 Trinity College organ.

With humour and compassion the film weaves together these narratives giving a voice to those left behind in the wake of rapid secularisation and change.

Rebel Angel is a film about identity, love, dysfunctional families, despair, the redemptive power of art, and the long, relentless reach of mentorship. Rebel Angel paints a portrait of the evanescent cultural figure Ross Woodman (1922-2014), Jungian author Marion Woodman, and their extraordinary marriage. Ross played a key role in the ‘Regionalist’ art scene in London, Ontario in the 1960s which gave us many of Canada’s most significant artists from that period. Marion was first introduced to Jung’s thought by Ross before they were married in the late 1950s. He accompanied Marion through her journey as a pioneering Jungian analyst who is credited with bringing the Feminine into depth psychology. A champion of creative imagination, he was also an original interpreter of depth psychology in the context of his profound knowledge of world literature and religions, particularly the Baha’i faith. His generosity as a mentor, and his pure artistry as a lecturer on the poetry of Blake, Shelley and the Romantics made him unforgettable, life changing. Through the prism of Woodman’s deeply troubled life, the film maker explores the dynamic among, love, creativity and madness in movies, poetry and art.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT REBEL ANGEL:

“I laughed, I wept. I was overwhelmed. A glorious celebration and a beautiful film in every way.”
—Karen Mulhallen, Poet, Editor of Descant magazine,
Professor Emeritus Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson)

“So much love there with zero sentimentality! I can’t remember watching a movie like that before.”
—John Hoedl, Jungian Analyst, President of the International Society
for Psychology as the Discipline of Interiority

“Far-reaching… It is a wonderful study of a cultural moment in Canada’s maturing cultural life…
It seemed to say things about you (or me) or anyone who has fallen under
the intense spell of the Romantic vision.”
—Johanne Clare, author and Professor, George Brown College

“I am utterly stunned by the brilliance and beauty and depth of Rebel Angel. Truly a masterpiece. ”
—David Haenke, Poet and Forest Manager, Ozark Regional Land Trust

“A masterful labour of love.”
—Deanne Bogdan, Professor Emerita, Department of Social Justice Education
Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto
